This is my first attempt at writing so please be gentle with me.
I have been flying for many years but this was my first inaugural flight of any kind. I arrived at the gate at 5:00 AM and there were many people already milling around the gate area. They were also setting up tables and the photo opportunity station with a green screen.
I overheard from some of the AA personnel that some of the food was to be hidden below the tables for the Beijing inaugural that was leaving from the same gate in a few hours. ( I hate to say it but it was like they were hiding the good stuff)
I took the picture from the Admirals club to get a better angle.
Everyone including myself seemed very excited and it was like a party atmosphere all around.
I missed my opportunity to go see the plane before boarding as I was at the AC and not at the gate.
When we did board it was a controlled madness but It was pretty smooth. We were handed gift bags upon entering the ramp that had some nice goodies in them. I had 19 H in coach (I was number 32 on the upgrade list) but the seat was fine and had lots of leg room.
I was sitting next to a women that did not know what all the hub bub was about and I think there were 3 other passengers that were in the same boat. Row 19 center section was like MCE seating and row 18 had about 6 or so feet of leg room. (If I figure out how to add more pictures I will)
Everyone was talking unlike a normal flight where the main attitude is leave me alone this was a 180 on that.
It was a nice change of pace and I wish there was a way to bottle it so it could be used on all flights !
We pushed back a few minutes late and did get part of a water cannon but a Airbus 330 was blocking part of the tarmac so I think we only got one side.
As we lifted off the runway the person in 19 I said ” It works” It was the perfect thing to say and everyone clapped.
The drinks were free in the back for all but I was told I got the last of the Vodka for my bloody merry.
The WIFI did not work for me at all but I did hear someone say that they had it working for a time. The crew is what really makes the flight and I am compelled to say that the 2 FA’s on my side were decidedly in a none upbeat state. All of the others were very upbeat and accommodating.
They let us take a look at everything on the 787 including the crew rest areas forward and back, They were much larger that i would have thought.
After we landed and got the the gate or as some call it Siberia (Gate L10 at ORD) we were allowed in the cockpit and had my picture taken by the pilot in the captains chair It was great !
I must say that I love the 787 It is quiet and seems to have more space. Plus the new plane smell was very nice.
